Drawing on Site and in the Museum: A Studio and Field Drawing Experience in Iberia

Instructor: Cindy Ludlam

Program Date: June 12th - June 29th, 2008

Learning basic observational drawing skills can substantially enhance the study of natural and man-made forms, but most people don’t have the background or confidence to sketch in the field or a museum. Taught by an artist/educator, this class introduces students to basic drawing and drafting techniques that they can continue to expand on their own. Students will draw in the galleries in the Museum Nacional de Arqueologia, Lisbon, Portugal. In addition to drawing in the museum, students will travel to the Portuguese sites of the villa of Torre de Palma, the dolmen of Mata and other archaeological sites.  While in Spain, students will be taken to the provincial Roman Lusitanian capital of Augusta Emerita (Mèrida).

This course offers students an opportunity to develop and enhance perceptive and observational drawing skills. Emphasis will be placed on techniques associated with freehand drawing. Archaeological drawing situations will be covered by a trained archaeologist and students will experience an introduction to archaeological drafting, illustration, and the computerization of drawings. Students will also attend art history and archaeology lectures.

Students will be in the museum or out in the field and will work for 6-8 hours a day. The fee includes accommodations, transportation and entrance fees.  Drawing materials will be provided by the program although students will be asked to bring along additional supplies should students want to conduct watercolour or painting projects. Graduate students and undergraduates serious about pursuing a career in art, art history, and archaeology are encouraged to apply.  Special consideration will be granted to mature high school students. All applications will be considered.  This course may also be taken for college credit.

The program fee for this course is $2500.
