During the course of their work at the Museum, students are expected to become familiar with the methodology used for data collection from human skeletal remains, and be able to apply this knowledge to various museum situations (i.e. individual burials, disarticulated materials, highly fragmented remains, cremations, etc). Work will also include the preparation of a collection for adequate storage and future access by subsequent researchers. These remains will then be entered into a database which participants will learn how to create and maintain.
All stages of this work will be carried out in the laboratories and storerooms of the Museum, situated within the main building, in central Lisbon. Although no former experience is required, students interested in physical and biological anthropology are encouraged to apply. Participants will be given ample opportunities to ask questions and will be supervised on a daily basis.
This project is designed to be an educational opportunity for participants and all materials will be provided for by the museum. The work week will consist of four to five days/seven hours a day with weekends being open for travel or field trip opportunities.
